Things are quiet here in Madrid during the month of August. The majority of the city takes the month off for vacation and at every other shop/restaurant you see this:
I'm telling you just about everything is closed. That second picture is of the NEWS STAND on our corner. Want a copy of El Pais or Vogue Spain? Yeah, you're out of luck for the month of August.
On the bright side, it's a lot easier to get reservations to those restaurants that ARE open during August and there are fewer people in front of you in line at the stores that are open. (BTW we went to the restaurant El Paraguas with some friends last week. Its normally really difficult to get into but during August - no problem. It was great - a little pricey, but then again we've paid more for some really bad meals here in Madrid.)
Another bright spot is that the peace and quiet has also given me time to get to one of the projects I've had on hold:
I used the "Madison Bag" pattern from Amy Butler's design line. The fabric is also Amy Butler design which I ordered from Hancock's of Paducah an online fabric store with an awesome selection. So if any of you ever find yourself - like me - in a foreign country that favors animal patterned polyester fabrics at astronomical prices, know that you can still have cute, reasonably priced fabric shipped to you from the good ol' US of A. Since purchasing the fabric, Hancock's sent me a catalog of their fabric stock. It's pretty much just 30 pages of awesome fabric that makes me want to start 100 projects at once. The Hubby has had to repeatedly tell me to CALM DOWN because I was hyperventilating while imagining how cute the electric green toile pattern would look in a placemat. I think I've got it together now, but watch for more projects soon because I have no self control.
Actually, my next project is a sewing machine cover. The dust here can be terrible and it's taking a bit of toll on my little machine. I bought this gorgeous "pheasant batik" material at the same time I bought the fabric for the purse and I think it's going to make a cute sewing machine cover:
For anyone who is interested that is from the Sis Boom fabric line. So enough fabric talk huh? We may have a few trips coming up so I hope to have some other interesting photos of Spain up soon. Until then - I hope everyone is enjoying their summer!
