I made a submission last year to Hand and Lock's Prize for Embroidery. The 2017 brief was ‘celebrate, let go, to let loose and indulge in childlike freedom, to celebrate history, global culture, sense of place, sense of identity, and to celebrate embroidery and life’.
Since this was also a celebration of Hand and Lock's 250th anniversary, my concept was to update a form of jewelry that was popular 250 years ago - the "lovers eye" jewelry. This was a brooch or necklace with just the eye of a person's love interest so that you could keep their image close to you without divulging their identity to people around you.
I tried to update the lover's eye concept a few ways - I embroidered on denim and made the eye a bit punk rock. I pulled together Pinterest page with inspirational ideas. My concept from start to finish:
I'm flashing back to this project from last year since the submission deadline is coming up this week for 2018's Prize and I've been doing some sketching and brainstorming for this year's submission:
I didn't get to the next level with last year's submission but it's a really fun way to jump start some creativity. I'll upload my final ideas when I complete this and I'm always excited to see the other submission for the Prize.
